First-Year Profile: Jaheim Singletary
Georgia signed the nation’s No. 3 overall class in the 2022 recruiting cycle, per 247Sports. The Bulldogs inked 30 signees. So, over the next month, Dawg-Watch.com will be looking at Georgia’s incoming freshmen in a revamped series called “First-Year Profile.”
Next, we will look at five-star cornerback Jaheim Singletary.
Ranking: Singletary was rated the nation’s No. 27 overall player, the No. 5 cornerback and the No. 5 player in the state of Florida, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
Size: 6-foot-1, 175-pounds
Story: Singletary’s recruitment had quite the drama, unlike some others. The former five-star prospect was once committed to Ohio State, but de-committed on Aug. 1, 2021. After backing off his pledge from the Buckeyes, it was thought that he would commit to Florida. After taking two unofficial visits to Gainesville in the fall, Singletary committed to Georgia the day that former Gators’ head coach Dan Mullen was fired. He inked his letter of intent three weeks later on Early Signing Day and enrolled at UGA in May.
2022 Impact: Singletary is one of the five defensive backs that UGA signed in its 2022 recruiting class. His size, speed and length are perfect for him to be a future cornerback in the SEC. Singletary will more than likely primarily be used at that position during his career with the Bulldogs. Despite not being an early enrollee, he could earn some playing time this fall; however, that depends on how well he adjusts to the speed at the collegiate level. Singletary will get plenty of reps this upcoming fall camp in August.
The Bulldogs lost Derion Kendrick to the 2022 NFL Draft, but return Kelee Ringo, who will occupy that other starting corner position. William Poole III also returns for his senior season, although he is slated to play several different positions, including safety. That means that Singletary will likely compete with Poole for that other spot at cornerback. Regardless, he will also have to battle sophomore Kamari Lassiter, redshirt freshman Nyland Green and freshman Daylen Everette for playing time in 2022.
Scouting Report:
“A larger corner that can essentially take away one side of the field. Measured just over 6-foot-2 the summer before his senior season. Uses that length to his advantage as he doesn’t give quarterbacks much room to work with, especially on deeper shots. Has gotten more and more aggressive in press coverage over the years and is more than capable of getting a wide receiver off schedule. Relatively fluid hips allow him to mirror those same wideouts as they try to work their way down the field. Does a nice job of anticipating throws and timing his breaks. Will fight through hands at the catch point in hopes of making a play. Willing tackler that lunges at ball carriers and strikes them before wrapping up. Limited verified testing data makes it hard to gauge true top-end speed. Does, however, appear to be pretty quick in pads and is able to close most gaps on Friday nights. Has produced time after time going up against the strong competition in the Sunshine State and has totaled 10 interceptions and 20 pass breakups in three years at the varsity level. Must add some core strength and keep developing coverage techniques, but has what it takes to emerge as a potential CB1 type for a Top 25 program given long arms and instincts. Likely to find the most success in a defense that wants its corners to man up on most downs. NFL upside.” - Andrew Ivins, 247Sports
